I am a father, husband, uncle, business owner, and the Head of Innovation and Technology at Temple Dev.
In the Beginning
At a very young age, my Dad introduced me to the Odyssey game console; you had to stick the plastic level overlays on the tv screen (they stuck to the tv by the static on the screen). You navigated the characters with these strange controllers. I was very fascinated by all this, and naturally my digital curiosity was ignited. It would be years after that we could actually afford our first computer and I could finally start creating my own digital creations.
How did you get into your field in Technology?
I’ve always picked jobs for what I can learn from them, eventually leading me to now running my own business. This has obviously changed the landscape of “your field” quite a bit as there are various roles you take on as a business owner.
After grinding away tirelessly after hours whilst working a full time job, I was finally approached by a prominent media agency in Johannesburg and joined their mobile game development team, where we created many mobile games and some desktop games. From there I moved to developing online solutions for an entertainment company, and later moved to working on their portfolio of international gambling games, this was the start of my .net development.
I moved on to freelancing for a couple of years and was approached by the oldest and largest local publishing house in South Africa, where I headed up the development of their eLearning solutions and interactive content creation that is available on all mobile and desktop platforms.
I felt it was time to move on and innovate in a new space, and the opportunity to partner with Brendan at Temple – Wisdom Online became available. This came from an opportunity that was nurtured and grown over several years of hard work, and delivering quality work from time to time when Temple required some extra hands.
That brings us to where we are now. There are exciting plans on the horizon and an ace team of developers that help me solve my “crazy” ideas, as well as my “You know what would be cool!” statements.
What does a day in the life of Francois look like?
Being a self employed Dad of two curious, energetic toddlers, my day gets pretty chaotic. The average day is normally from early morning until late nights.
What skills do you need, to be in your field?
Patience, determination, goal setting, time management, people skills.
How have you developed those skills?
Sacrifice and hard work, putting in the time to upskill myself, building healthy relationships with like-minded people, and building out experimental and innovative solutions. I very often force myself into uncomfortable situations to make sure I push myself to grow and expand my point of view.
